My great-great grandfather's name is Phillip Schnarr.
1) He was born 10 Dezember 1846 in Hessen.
2) His obituary (Todesanzeige) says he was born at Muhlheim, Hesse Kassel, Germany. A renowned family history researcher (Ein berühmt Forscher), Trudy Schenk, who lives in Utah told me that she does not believe he was born in Muhlheim because it's not in Hesse Kassel and the family name (Zuname) Schnarr does not appear in that area. She told me that family name appears in the Bad Hersfeld area.
3) Phillip's naturalization certificate (Einbürgerungsbescheinigung) says he owes his loyalty to the Elector of Hesse Kassel.
4) The 1870 United States Census (Volkszählung) says he was born in Hessia.
5) I believe he was Lutheran (Evangelisch) because his marriage was officiated by a minister of the German Evangelical Church in Marysville, Marshall County, Kansas. His funeral sermon was given by a minister of the Idaho Springs Colorado Presbyterian Church, a protestant denomination. Phillip Schnarr had a brother named Adam who also came to the United States.
1) Adam Schnarr was born in about 1830.
2) His naturalization certificate (Einbürgerungsbescheinigung) also says he owes his loyalty to the Elector of Hesse Kassel.
3) The 1870 United States Census (Volkszählung) says he was born in Hessia.
4) Adam arrived in New York on 30 Oct 1860 at age 30 aboard the ship Herzogin Von Brabant from Bremen. His previous residence was listed as Prussia. The two previous names on the ship list are Christine Dippel, age 27 and Gotthard Aha, age 22, a farmer who was also from Prussia.
He came with an Eva Schnarr who I believe was his wife Margretha Leidorf whom he married at New York on 1 Nov 1860, two days after his arrival from Deutschland. Margretha's obituary (Todesanzeige) says she was a member of the German Lutheran Church. I recently found Margretha's church baptism (taufe). The record says she was born 4 Oktober 1829 at Ersrode, Hessen. However, unfortunately there were no Schnarrs in the same parish. I was hoping the discovery of her record would lead us to the Schnarrs, but it hasn't.
Phillip Schnarr's sister, Anna Christine Schnarr, also emigrated to the United States:
1) She arrived in the United States at New York on 4 November 1865 at age 21 aboard the J.L. Thiermann from Bremen. Hesse was her previous residence according to the ship list. The five previous names before hers were people from Wuetteremburg. The name after hers is Albert Zimmermann a 21 year-old shoemaker from Hesse. The second name after hers was Ph. Fischer. He was not from Hesse.
2) The 1870 Census says she was born in "Hessan". The 1880 Census also says her birthplace is Hesse.
3) Her 1910 obituary says she was born at Muhlheim, Hesse Kassel, Germany.
So far the following parishes have been checked and my Schnarr ancestors are not in the records there:
