Hi, Gibt es jemand unter Euch der sich meiner erbarmen wuerde und die deutsche Version der Siebenbuergen-Seite mal ansehen, bzw. meinen zum Teil einfache Aussprache auf einen etwas erhobenen Stand bringen wuerde ? Die Teile: Einleitung; Heutige Siedlungsgebiete; Kirchliche EInteilung; und Geschichte (vor Sept 1944) sind ok aber ansonsten....(besonders "Auswanderungswellen") ? Anders ausgedrueckt : Help ! Yes, I've noticed the same sort of thing. I hope that this is not indicating a problem with the mirroring software? Perhaps files are not up to date on the system where the link checker is running? On the AKdFF case I caused the image to link to a full-sized view of the image to make it easier to view, and also because I could not decide whether it should link to the English or German version of the AKdFF page. Hello, The aim of the page is up to you. I had guessed that your purpose was to encourage the German societies to have a greater WWW presence, which I know has been Rainer's goal for a few years now. This could be a good reason for making a nice page with all the logos showing because society members may see this and say "me too". Rick P.S. WOlf, Du hast eben von vornherein ein Konzept gehabt und hast die Struktur bestimmt. Bei /gene/ haben wir dies nie gemacht und jetzt ist es IMO zu spaet, die Seiten aus den Regionalseiten noch herauszuloesen - s.o. Wenn wir von Anfang an ein directory /gene/ver/ haetten, haetten wir es auch so handhaben koennen. Eigentlich habe ich mal einen Versuch gemacht, darum ist /gene/vereine/ entstanden, aber es war nur halbherzig. Auch Ricks Versuch wurde aufgegeben; die Diskussionen per Email ist eben zu schwierig. Den meisten "Maintainern" sind die "general" pages eben egal. Dear Jim, ad 2 : how do you specify a subdirectory ? Hotbot is offering something similar - there the command is "+originurlpath:subdir" - at least in theory - doesn't work :-((. Is there a description of the syntax available on the web ? General comment : as you state - it's only as good as their crawler ! If we want to use it (without confusing people) someone should check which pages are actually found, and submit the missing ones. Just as an example : I have searched for my name (mentioned as page maintainer on almost 100 pages) - only 18 were found ! The same search on the Basel mirror (http://www.eye.ch) found at least 34. If this is average, many people will be confused : they were sure they had seen a word on our pages - and the search doesn't find it :-(. Doug Schorey had a search routine on a subdirectory on his pages (which have been moved to http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/schori/ in the meantime) : this relied on some script provided by his (former) provider and doesn't work on my swissgen pages. It not only worked for a subdirectory - it worked without relying on any crawler. Would one of you computer experts out there like to contact him ? His address is <dms(a)netcom.com>. If a new page is added or an old one expanded, it won't show up on the report. I don't think this is fatal however. I've made a rudimentary search capability for our German genealogy website. You can find it at <http://www.genealogy.com/gene/tmp/up/pages/search.html> It uses JavaScript, i.e. runs a script on the user's browser, not on the server. It uses the AltaVista website, so it is only as good as their crawler. Some bugs/features that you may want to know about: 1. Pressing enter in the search string, at least with my browser, results in a new copy of the search page, with the search string cleared. 2. All of www.genealogy.com is searched, including whatever is outside the gene scheme. I guess this can be changed easily. 3. The resulting page of hits is delivered directly by the AltaVista server; the user must press Back to get back to our site. Much the same functionality could also be created without JavaScript, just initializing the search string and relying on the user not to delete that initialization. My impression is that genealogy.com, which remember, is also qrz.com, gets far too many visitors to support the probable number of CGI programs running at once on that machine. Guten Tag, als Anlage erhalten Sie einen Entwurf einer AMF-Seite. Ich bitte um Stellungnahme dazu, bevor ich in dieserRichtung weiter mache. Insbesondere möchte ich etwas zum angedachten Hintergrund und der Steuerung "zurück" mit dem Pfeil wissen. Ich möchte gerne die gesamten Seiten der AMF mit dem/einem Hintergrund versehen, um so etwas mehr auf den Verein zu verweisen. Auch wenn dessen Seiten auf "Eurem" Server liegen. Dear Jim, I entirely agree with your conclusions - I guess I have started a new thread by mentioning WorldGenWeb ;-). I agree especially that - despite all sorts of shortcomings of WGW - there is something to be learned by just looking at their pages. Just now you only wanted to start a discussion on availability of pages in German and English - for my Switzerland pages I have to add French and Italian, and there is a lot missing : there is no other way around this problem (in my case) than finding more individuals with the necessary language skills, willing to contribute; I am making slow progress there. The language best represented on the Swiss pages is undoubtedly English - so this shouldn't be a problem for our overseas friends ;-). I'll add my comments to other issues when the time comes. GERMAN-AMERICAN DAY, 1998 - - - - - - - BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION From the time our republic was born, German Americans have enriched our national life and culture. Many, seeking religious freedom, first settled in and around Philadelphia more than 300 years ago; and to this day, one of the largest neighborhoods in that city is called Germantown. Throughout the colonial period, more Germans arrived on these shores and made their homes throughout the Thirteen Colonies. Today, almost a quarter of the American people can trace their roots back to Germany. German Americans have had an important and lasting impact not only on the growth of our Nation, but also on the formation of many of our deepest values. As skilled and industrious farmers, German Americans have shared their love for the land and a strong sense of family and community. With a deep respect for education and the arts, they have broadened the cultural life of the communities in which they live. And, from their earliest days in this country, Germans and German Americans have revered freedom, as epitomized by the service of General Friedrich von Steuben during America's struggle for independence and by the dedication of the entirely German American Provost Corps which, under the command of Major Bartholomew von Heer, served as General Washington's personal guard unit during the Revolutionary War. All of us can take pride in the accomplishments of German Americans - as soldiers and statesmen, scientists and musicians, artisans and educators. It is fitting that we set aside this special day to remember and celebrate how much German Americans have done to preserve our ideals, enrich our culture, and strengthen our democracy. NOW, THEREFORE, I, WILLIAM J. CLINTON, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, October 6, 1998, as German-American Day. I encourage all Americans to recognize and celebrate the many gifts that millions of people of German descent have brought to this Nation and that have enriched the lives of our citizens. Fernando, the "majordomo" mailinglist programm is stupid and regards any mail with the key words such as /\bsubscribe\b/i as an admin-request; so I have to change this word and forward it to the list, sorry. If Elisabeth wants to read all the mail from the mailinglist, she is welcome. On the other hand, she stil learns, then maybe you first advise her and she could help you with whatever pages you need. Habe soeben 2 neue Versionennach /tmp/up/pages geladen: vereine_center.html (Ergaenzungen, Korrekturen) und vereine_links.html (Alternativ Vorschlag, linksbuendig) Dora, bitte loesche vereine.html, vereine2.html und vereine_neu.html Dora schrieb ausserdem: > Allerdings gibt > es noch etliche Vereine, die ihre pages unter /gene/reg/XYZ/ haben - > die sind ja dann auch auf "diesem Server"? Ich denke, dass ist ueber den Link zur verbaende.html Seite (unten auf der Seite) erledigt. Ausserdem: wer ist denn wirklich von den Vereinen sonst noch auf "diesem Server"? Hat da jemand einen Ueberblick greifbar? Mir macht momentan die Fusszeile mit dem (HOME) noch etwas Probleme. I've just uploaded a file to the standard upload directory <http://www.genealogy.com/gene/tmp/up/pages/dateien.html> This file lists the data fields maintained in several actual computer databases kept by German governmental offices that are of general interest to genealogists. Not all such databases are listed, but I believe the list of data fields is complete for each such database I did find. I have anonymized the listings. Another commercial avenue one could explore is no doubt with the fast-growing on-line booksellers. Our site is as much bibliography as it is anything else. No doubt a quite a few books are carried by folks such as amazon.com and some of the German on-line booksellers. Yes, that sounds like something that Rainer may wish to pursue. By the way, I wouldn't mind it if the top-level page contained a tasteful advertisement for Reiner's site. Or maybe we could sell space for an advertisement on the top-level site to help support genealogy.net. We get lots of hits on the top-level page, so I'm sure many would be interested in placing an advertisement there, even non-genealogical companies. There probably isn't money in the genealogy hobby to support too many web servers in the world anyway. (If the QRZ and Giessen don't want it, I suppose we could tell the script not to mirror the top-level page and let Rainer customize his version.) Just some ideas to consider.
