Perhaps I might be able to provide the viewpoint of a real foreigner who might use these pages, since my connection to the Germanic culture is a very old one.
I think every one of us has such old connections which pre-date the formation of Germany as a real nation.
Others are connected to ethnic German groups that never lay within Germany or Austria or Switzerland. The ties are familial, ethnic, and cultural in nature, not national.
Yet, we are dealing with people who are alive today and who all know what symbols are. We see a maple leaf on a flag and can associate it with people who live there - today. The same can be said of the black-red-gold. We do not wish to claim flags or colors which do not identify us with what we today know as German. No one is raising the colors of Oldenburg or Hessen here. We see things German which include culture, language and ethnic background with what we know today and that is the colors which represent it. I guess missed your point completely as I just don't see its relevance.
