I have just come across your Website and I hope you can help me. I am a Cree Aboriginal person from Moosonee, Ont. I presently reside in Thunder Bay, Ont. I am searching for the origination of my last name, "Iserhoff". The story is as follows; There came a Russian sailor into the Hudson & James Bay in the early 1700's. This chap did not go back on his ship but stayed and married a Cree lady and the name has lived but the recipients of this name are Cree people. Lately, while speaking to people they tell me the name is German. Perhaps you can clarify this for if you can. If it is German it would be interesting to meet the true recipients of this name. Again, if you can help me I would be greatly appreciative to your efforts. Meegwetch!
Ivan, I'm not sure if the word Indian is no longer politically correct but on the name thing with a Russian background I would suspect that it would be a rather hopeless search to find relatives who still have this name in Germany today. It's origin probably goes back to a place where they made or hammered iron things. Isen is an older way of saying eisen=iron. As you might know iron work goes back to antiquity and other people who are connected to this name origin are called Smith and Hammer and many other deriviations thereof. Other than that it's tough to give you any further leads. Fred Fred Rump http://www.k2nesoft.com/~fred 26 Warren St Beverly, NJ 08010 fred@compu.com or 609-386-6846 fred@k2nesoft.com
