Mach schnell, die Amis kommen: Dell launches free Net access in Europe By Ben Elgin, Sm@rt Reseller June 9, 1999 11:55 AM ET Sending ripples through the ISP market, Dell Computer Corp. Tuesday announced that it is offering free, unlimited Internet access in Europe. In a statement from Dell's Europe, Middle East and Africa unit, the company outlined plans for DellNet, which goes live Tuesday in the United Kingdom and will soon follow in France and Germany. The company also plans on rolling out service "in other European countries during this year," said the company. The statement made no mention of a free-access foray into the United States. Dell officials did not respond to calls by press time. The news is groundbreaking for Dell and its competitors in that DellNet is targeting all users, not just Dell customers. Gateway 2000 Inc. has offered Net access since 1997; however, it has always restricted the offer to its customers. Working in conjunction with British Telecommunications, the DellNet service promises unlimited free access to the Internet and a free e-mail address. DellNet is also tapping Excite as a partner to provide customizable start pages with news and information channels. Dell says there will be no registration, setup or monthly connection fees. Consumers will be responsible for the cost of the local phone call. Tying in with the Round Rock, Texas, company's core competency, the DellNet service will be pre-installed on Dell's Dimension PCs with Windows 98, a desktop line for home and small business customers. To get online, users click on the DellNet icon on their desktop and a browser will open displaying the DellNet home page. Gateway launched its Gateway.Net service in late 1997, offering customers monthly access starting at $12.95. Now the company is touting one year of free access with most consumer PC purchases. The service includes one e-mail address, FTP access, 24-hour tech support as well as Internet access. 26 Warren St. Beverly, NJ 08010 or 4788 Corian Court, Naples, FL 34114 or somewhere on the road but connected to fred@compu.com
