This is our third bimonthly newsletter. This will be e-mailed to all project contributors who are on-line and mailed via post to all who are not. At present about 1/3 of our members are available only by letter. The new computer system is up and running -- have somehow misplaced some correspondence. Not to worry -- its all here someplace! Thanks to all of you for your patience. There are LOTS of new surnames and contributor information to sift through and more coming in every day as people discover us. Please also visit the new ZARP web site at www.iols.com/users/bingham. Our thanks to Pat Smith and Mike Churilla for the photos we put up, too! And please let us know if there is anything we can do to make this new web site more useful to you. (The Delphi Forum's ZARP web page will remain up at: http://members.delphi.com/pkbingham but it is much more limited in size.) Best to check with the new web site at iols.com for all the latest. -- Paul K. Bingham ZARP Team Leader bingham@iols.net
AUGUST TRIP TO ZAMAGURZE AREA_______________ Enough ZARP members have signed up now for this August's special Zamagurze area trip with veteran tour guide Helene B. Cincebeaux that the trip is now officially "A GO"! And those of us going could not be more excited! But she still has room for a few more. This will be a wonderful opportunity to fully experience our ancestor's birthplace firsthand and explore our ancestral villages. And if Helene has anything to do with it, many will find living relatives to share family history with aided by her translators in both Slovak and Polish. If you can POSSIBLY go with us we would love to have you join us! It is this August 12th through the 24th. Helene can take a maximum of 35 on this trip. If you would like to go or would like more info you can still contact her by e-mail at: helenezx@aol.com. We will be staying in the beautiful Tatra mountain town of Zdiar. If you haven't seen photos of this dream village yet check them out at: http://www.tatry.sk/zdiar.html (A member asked how close NATO actions in Kosovo were to our ZARP study. For those unfamiliar with Europe this is a fair question. While the southern half of Italy is nearby (across the Adriatic sea), where we are going in August is at least 450 miles north and several countries away. We will actually be closer to Sweden than we will to Kosovo on our enjoyable Zamagurze/Zdiar Homecoming Trip. I certainly hope none will let these distant skirmishes dissuade them from a most wonderful adventure to our family's homeland.)
WEBSITES TO CHECK OUT______________________ To see some great Zamagurze area places and read about them in English be sure and visit these sites: www.region.sk/zamagurie.html www.region.sk/pieniny.html www.region.sk/cervenyklastor.html www.region.sk/folklore.html www.narty.info.pl/bukowina.htm (We will be visiting ALL of these places in August!)

You Osturna folks note just how many surnames are the same even though the neighboring villages were of different faiths. Nevertheless many intermarriages took place -- a fact worth considering elsewhere in our ZARP study. Also note the variations in spelling over the years. Too, some old script is very hard to read -- Tony did his best and I've printed them here just as he sent them in. In some instances the first "s" in a double s was written to look like an "f". This is certainly the case in "KRIFSANDA" which we know to be KRISSANDA. It may be the case with others, too. Use your heads and the soundex when comparing!
And I promise to print Fred Hyzny's extracted list of surnames next issue! Just no room! Tony has had his in to us since November!
PLEASE NOTE_______________________ We have had several members who have recently visited their ZARP villages and report how much we could help especially with repairs to village churches left so long neglected under decades of Communist rule. One such member is Marion Monkvic who visited little Velka Frankova who's surnames appear above. The centuries-old church has an alter which is badly in need of repair. If any of you would like to help out in whatever way you can please feel free to contact Marion at: monkvicm@compuall.net We may wish to do something further for other villages as well in the future. Your suggestions on where and just how are welcome!
