Yet, we are dealing with people who are alive today and who all know what symbols are. We see a maple leaf on a flag and can associate it with people who live there - today. The same can be said of the black-red-gold. We do not wish to claim flags or colors which do not identify us with what we today know as German. No one is raising the colors of Oldenburg or Hessen here. We see things German which include culture, language and ethnic background with what we know today and that is the colors which represent it.
I guess missed your point completely as I just don't see its relevance.

My only purpose in writing at all was to provide some assurance, Fred, that it was not necessarily political correctness behind the use or non-use of the flag, but simply the separation of ethnicity from nationhood. Nonetheless, it is not my intent to influence the decision in any way, nor would it be appropriate for me to try do so. I do not normally engage in webpage discussions, but thought that in this case I might provide some helpful food for thought. Thank you for your time. Jennifer
