Hi, A few thoughts: -It would be nice if the pages could have the standard German Genealogy headers and links. -Another reason that books may be hard to read is that the recorder also had to make his own ink. If he got the mixture wrong, ink quality would suffer. It's not like today where we just buy a new pen. -About spelling, it's not just that people were illiterate. There was a completely different mindset. Today we look at the spelling of our name and for all practical purposes, that IS our name. Pronunciation varies all over the place and sometimes we don't even bother to correct people when they mispronounce our name. The pronunciation of our name may even have been changed when we emigrated, which is true of mine for example. But in the old days, it was the other way around. It was the pronunciation of your name which mattered. How it was spelled was a mere detail. You could spell it any way you liked so long as it permitted the reader to pronounce it correctly. So you will see even the very literate Shakespeare spelling his name in several different ways. -Where the word "bans" is used, I think "banns" is meant. In the same paragraph, "Sometime" ought to be "Sometimes". -The first time that Family History Centers is mentioned it would be nice if there were a link to our FHL page (/gene/lds) -If this material is excerpted, that tutorial should be named and credited. -The following sentence needs at least an "of": In a later chapter I will bring in some examples of "exotic" or "flowery" renderings of the beginning letters a word. -It would be nice if the 1st script example could be rotated to a "portrait" orientation, although perhaps this is better for printing? -I suppose we should link to this from the General Help section? we've had a short discussion on this subject several months ago - in the meantime Tim Philipp and Jerry Reidt have submitted their pages - have a look at :

and especially at the images linked to at the bottom of this page. Although these pages were prepared by "SwissGen people" we felt that they are of general interest for German speaking researchers, and should not "hide" under a .../reg/CH/-URL.
Please, send us your comments. My only major comment is, that the pages with typed text only should be converted from *.jpg to *.txt - would be even easier to read and reduce file size (loading time) considerabely.
