Replacement will hopefully be back online next week. You may have noticed our Myron Grunwald Memorial FEEFHS WebServer generates a "404" for all 3,900 URL's these days. FYI our Sun UNIX Spark 1 Web Server died sometime early last Thursday a.m. It had been online full time for over 3 years for us and 8 to 10 years with others before we bought it. The problem is somewhere in the server itself and is NOT in the hard drive. I finally confirmed that it was not a question of re-booting or of switching from primary to backup hard drive on Friday while at Burgoyne, our ISP here in Salt Lake City. I initiated a search for a replacement - another old used Sun UNIX IPX (Spark 1) server. While none could be located in or near Salt Lake City, one was located at Folsum CA and delivered by the owner to the system administrator of AFES (our former Woodland Califonria ISP) last Saturday afternoon. The AFES system adminisrator is a friend and is technically up to speed on SUN UNIX IPX web servers - something I have not yet found in Utah. Accordingly I shipped the dead system and both hard drives (Primary and backup) by FedEx to AFES Woodland on Saturday by FedEx. It will arrive at AFES Woodland Monday morning, 21 December. The 2 hard drives will be installed into the "new" used IPX Spark 1. The replacement system will tested and then returned to me by FedEx, arriving Tuesday or Wednesday Dec 22 or 23. I hope to again co-locate it at Burgoyne in SLC before I leave for home for Christmas early Thursday. Unfortunately it is premature (financially and technically) to cut over to a used Spark 5. This was and is my plan as soon as we have the $3,000 to do it in the FEEFHS Memorial Fund. The fund is now at about $800, mostly from Gayle Grunwald O'Connell and IGS). The Spark 5 uses a more sophisticated operating system (Solaris UNIX vs. Sun 4.3.1 UNIX) and we frankly need to raise more $$ to pay for it and need the time to program it. The plan is to cut it over after it is programmed, fully tested and ready - maybe later on in 1999 or early 2000 when we can afford it. Thus now is not the time to try to bring it on line. This replacement box is an emergency expense - estimated to be roughly $600-$700 - will be taken from FEEFHS reserves. If any of you are looking for a worthy charity to donate a few bucks to, consider sending a small check to the FEEFHS Memorial Fund" to help up get the bucks to pay for the newer, better Myron Grunwald Memorial WebServer that we need. Send any contribution to FEEFHS, PO Box 510898, Salt lake City Utah 84151-0898. FYI Volume 6 (1998) of The "FEEFHS Quarterly", 100+ pages and successor to the FEEFHs newsletter" is on its way to the printers and will be mailed to all next month. Thom. Edlund and Joe Everett of the FHL are editors, and there are excellent articles, incuding 3 on the "EWZ" collection (1900+ reels) of 1939-1945 immigration records of Germans repatriated to Germany from eastern Europe (Russia, Baltics, Poland, Bulgaria, etc) before/during WW II. Sorry about the web server. I had hoped that our old SUN CPU would hold out until we had the bucks for a newer faster Spark 5, but no such luck. Happy Holidays to all...
