I agree absolutely that a colored page is a good idea, but I also agree with Guenther that a black background is not good to be read.
Ich habe mal zwei Entwuerfe gemacht und nach up/pages geladen:

Was meint Ihr dazu?
Good to see, especially since I have now received 5 votes against my idea. :) (including 2 below) In the comments I read, I didn't see (with the partial exception of Fred) any comments about what was good about what I did or any suggestions of an alternative way of doing it, so I hope that that means that you are all planning on proffering your own versions for us to review. I hope so! or are we to forever languish in the Gray Lands? :) colors3_de : is changing the background from browser default to white really worth it? colors2_de : I like the idea of a pattern, but can we not get a pattern which has some meaning for German genealogy? A random off-white pattern seems to me similar enough to the current gray so as to not be worth it. In both cases, I would consider the hardcoding on the link colors harmful. The only justifiable reason for changing link colors is so that they will be readable against a changed background color. If one isn't changing the background in a way so as to make the the text unreadable, it is abusive to the user to change and thus possibly override the text color defaults he has chosen in his browser. I am not necessarily proposing that every page be colored this way. But perhaps it makes for a more interesting "welcome mat"?
I can't say I like blue on black. The yellow is OK but a black background would take some getting used to. It reminds me a lot of a funeral page. From: Monika Ferrier <mferrier@fhs.csu.McMaster.CA> To: Richard Heli <heli@best.com> re. coloured web pages: you know, Rick, as soon as I read your "background is black" description, I knew it wouldn't work. You see, colour suggestions for slides for presentations say: use a dark background with the writing at the other end of the spectrum (preferably dark blue rather than black, with yellow writing; black provides too great a contrast). Of course, this is often disregarded and many use pastel backgrounds with wonderful results. But, in general the dark background works best for slides because the room is darkened; it won't work as well for web pages because one usually has the room lights on.
