[webpages-l] optimise your images / updated Swiss images
Dear All, recently I've come across a very nice service for Image Optimisation : http://www.netmechanic.com/GIFBot.htm You can specify an image (has to be online) or a whole page, they will reduce the size of the file and display the result; by just moving the cursor you can easily compare the reduced with the original image, and decide to download the best compromise between image quality and file size. I have reduced the size of the images on my Stiftsarchiv St.Gallen page by almost a factor of two, without any major loss of image quality : http://www.genealogy.com/gene/tmp/up/pages/ch/sgstia-d.htm http://www.genealogy.com/gene/tmp/up/pages/ch/sgstia1.jpg http://www.genealogy.com/gene/tmp/up/pages/ch/sgstia2.jpg http://www.genealogy.com/gene/tmp/up/pages/ch/sgstia3.jpg http://www.genealogy.com/gene/tmp/up/pages/ch/sgstia-q.jpg could someone, please, MOVE all these files to .../reg/CH/kant/... I had also work them on the Switzerland maps I inherited when I joined the team - as I didn't want to change images like these without approval, I have loaded them to Basel only so far; have a look at http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/ch1798.gif (528k instead of 745k) http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/ch1995.gif (275k instead of 344k) http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/chspra.jpg (80k instead of 179k - note the change from gif to jpg) If you want to see the different results and compare them yourself, make sure to get a cup of coffee first : large images like these take ages ! PLEASE, let me know if I should load these reduzed size images to the other 3 servers as well. BTW : They do a link check as well. Best regards - Wolf -------------- Wolf W.
