Dear Mr. Gindrich, you had also sent this note to webpages-l@genealogy.net - and from there you received already the information about geocities providing free space for web pages; as a matter of fact, quite a few genealogy pages may be found there - usually under their "Heartland" addresses. In theory you can write your HTML web page using any ASCII editor - which is not very comfortable, however. Several specific HTML editors may be downloaded from the www - at least fully functional demo versions : you usually will be expected to pay some fee after a test period, but could get used to the product - and if you are quick you might finish your page during the test period ;-). We had been in touch about extinct surnames earlier on : in principle I agree, it is an interesting subject - with too many other projects on the way, however, it was not possible for me to get involved directly. You now addressed webpages-l, the list concerning the German Genealogy pages : were you still thinking about extinct surnames in Switzerland only - or on a larger scale (German speaking, European, ...) ? If you are still thinking about extinct Swiss names only, we may soon have the infrastructure to make information on these names available to the genealogical community on the www - we are at the moment working on a project called "Swiss Surname Dictionary"; start at : http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/surnam-m.htm As this project is still in test phase, I would ask you NOT to PUBLICISE this URL any further - but you are welcome to have a look. We (I'm not the only person behind this) could discuss whether extinct names could be a special category in this dictionary : any entry would require, of course, some sound research on the surname and sources mentioning it. This would still leave the need to find co-workers to actually collect this information : have you had any thoughts yet, how to attract people to join the project ? Best regards - Wolf

Dear Mr, The surnames which have become extinct should be listed on the WWW pages to illustrate the scale of this problem. As I am not so well familiar with editing WWW pages. I can only use e-mail and WWW browsers but I have no rights to establish for example my own WWW page. It's the question of money. People working at my university as me can only use e-mail or browsers WWW. If one wants to edit his own internet page than he must pay some amount of money to do it. I unfortunetely cannot afford it. So I apply to you to provide me with data bases or tools I can use to communicate my views on the subject. With best regards, Piotr Gindrich
P.S. I hope I am contacting with someone from Switzerland. The roots of my surname are there. -------------------------------------------------- PIOTR GINDRICH, MA Maria Curie-Sklodowska University Institute of Education Faculty of Special Education Narutowicza 12; room 64A Postal Code: 20-004 LUBLIN POLAND Phone number: work 081-5322266, home 081-7470702 E-mail: piotrgin@sokrates.umcs.lublin.pl --------------------------------------------------
