Re: Coutries included in FAQ for soc.genealogy.surnames.german
Dora, The DEU place codes include the states of the Deutsches Reich about 1905, which covers all the places you cite as former german territories. The AUT place codes include the states of the Austrian portion of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This covers some of the areas of (former) German settlement that you mention, such as Galicia, Bukovina, Bohemia, Moravia, and Austrian Silesia. There is also a code for Sudetenland, SUD,DEU (the DEU recognizing its annexation to Germany before and during WWII). There is a code for the moderan Austrian state of Burgenland, BUR,AUT. Queries using any of these place codes will be included in soc.genealogy.surnames.german. I'll update the FAQ to emphasize the extent of the areas included in the DEU and AUT codes. The rest of the areas of former German settlement are more problematic. The automoderator routes messages to the appropriate regional soc.genealogy.surnames.* groups according to place codes. There is no reliable way for the automoderator to distinguish a German from a non-German name. Including all queries about ancestors in Russia, the Baltic states, Hungary, the old Yugoslavia, and Romania would not be appropriate. (The same problem applies with regions of heavy German settlement in the USA, including Pennsylvania, the Mohawk Valley of New York, and parts of Texas.) At least for now, we have decided to leave queries for these regions out of s.g.s.german. If you wish to include a query for these areas in s.g.s.german, you could show the migration from Germany, Austria, or the Holy Roman Empire explicitly in the subject. If you have Styrian ancestry in the Banat, for example, you could show the migration as "1AK,HRR > BAN,HUN". The complete place code list for the group is shown alphabetically at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~surnames/abbreviations.cgi. Descriptive lists organized hierarchically and be historical periods are in the FAQs at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~surnames/german-codes-1815 http://www.rootsweb.com/~surnames/hrcodes Regards, Bill Mills, co-moderator soc.genealogy.surnames/GENNAM-L

Hi, in the draft for FAQ: soc.genealogy.surnames.german, part 2.: "Coutries included" there are missing any references to: - former german territories, see: http://www.genealogy.com/gene/reg/ger1990.htm#egemdeu - (former) german settlements, see: http://www.genealogy.com/gene/reg/ESE/ Would it be possible to mention this coutries as well? Thanks, Dora, dselig@genealogy.net ----- End Included Message -----
