I just tried to access the old URL address for the German white pages and it was a pretty frustrating experience. Other servers may have work more efficiently than mine - you might get there with a single address entry - but I had to go to the German Genealogy home page first to get to the site. http://w3g.med.uni-giessen.de/gene/misc/phone.html On that page there is a list of all of the countries w/on line phonebooks. Click on Germany. You will see three URLs: http://www.etv.de/ http://www.Teleinfo.de/ http://www.teleauskunft1188.de The last one has directions in English, German and French. I did not try it. I used teleinfo.de because I had used it before. It takes a long time to load and is a waste of time...accesses games and lotteries, etc. w/auskunft (a phone icon) to click on to find the info pages. That takes you to etv.de. So click on etv.de to start with. Click on the word "Suchmaske" (search form). Page with form comes up Put name you want (last name only is enough) At Ort put in the town in Germany if you know it Any other info like the address or province (i.e. Bayern, Sachsen, Hesse, Wurttemburg) It will search only on the name if that is all you know. The word "Anfrage" is question. When the form is filled out click on that. On each screen be sure to scroll down so you see everything there. Next screen tells you result. "Ort Unbekannt" means the town you entered is unknown - misspelled or something. If you have entered a town and a province, eliminate the province and try the town again to be sure that it is not just unknown in that province. Try optional spellings of the town. I was given the place "Seidingen." I thought that it must be in Wurttemberg (lots of "ingen" places around Stuttgart) or Hesse. I also thought that "Seidlingen" might be the proper way to spell it. But a search on both spellings came up with "Ort Unbekannt." I tried again with "Sei...." instead of "Sie...." and that didn't work either. So we have to do more research to find out what the proper spelling of the place might be. If there is a "zero" result on your search you may have a surname that is misspelled. For example I searched on Herszog - the name of a friend from New Ulm. No matches were found. But on Herzog there were more than 2000 possibilities! "Herszog" is a misspelling as far as the Germans are concerned. On the "results" screen you have to click on "loschen" to see the list of names and scroll. Karen ----- End Included Message -----
