Weiss jemand, wie man "Verkartete Kirchenbuecher" auf englisch sagt? Oder/und wie man den Begriff auf englisch beschreiben wuerde?

heisst verkartet denn indexed?
aus dem Taschenbuch Ribbe/Henning: ... eine bessere Benutzbarkeit der Kirchenbuecher durch die *Verkartung* moglich, d.h. durch die Verzeichnung der Eintraege auf einzelnen Karten; auf weite Sicht angelegt ist die Kirchenbuchverkartung mit dem Ziel, zu *Dorfsippenbuechern* zu kommen. D.h. das Wort "VERKARTUNG" kommt von Kartei-KARTEN. Ich nehme an, in der heutigen Zeit liegt kein Mensch mehr einzelne Karteikarten an, sondern schreibt (transcription) die Eintraege in PC (zwecks Weiter- verarbeitung, sortieren, Statistik, usw.)? Kann das bitte jemand ins englische Uebersetzen? Danke, Dora

Here's my attempt: Verkartung = (card) index if the references point to pages or entries within a work or series of works Verkartung = (card) catalog if the references point to works in a collection In each case, use the word "card" if the index/catalog is physically a set of cards. So in this case, "verkartete Kirchenbuecher" is probably best translated as "indexed church registers" unless you know that the index is on cards, in which case you would say "church registers with a card index". -- =Jim Eggert EggertJ@LL.mit.edu

I think that the 'indexed' portion can only be hoped for in a Verkartung of any kind. Normally and per the various references the task goes back to the record transcription onto cards. One could expect that these cards were then sortable but isn't that another whole process? In principle you are correct, Fred. But in the US I have rarely seen a card transcription that wasn't sorted. Sorting is the purpose after all. Normally one would sort the cards during transcription. That is, one would file Schulz under S as soon as one wrote the Schulz card. Also, many card transcriptions are sorted by having multiple transcriptions on a single card, each corresponding to an individual or family. This is a form of sorting that can't be undone and saves cards to boot. Of course, the Germans may do things differently. :-) -- =Jim Eggert EggertJ@LL.mit.edu
