Here's my attempt:

Verkartung = (card) index if the references point to pages or entries within a work or series of works

Verkartung = (card) catalog if the references point to works in a collection

In each case, use the word "card" if the index/catalog is physically a set of cards.

So in this case, "verkartete Kirchenbuecher" is probably best translated as "indexed church registers" unless you know that the index is on cards, in which case you would say "church registers with a card index".

Is that really what it is ? Right now I'm not commenting on Jim's translation, but the definition of "verkartet" : in my opinion this will usually be more than an index or catalog. Many church records will have an index in the actual book (or in a separate volume) - I wouldn't call this verkartet. Verkartet will often (though possibly not always) mean that 1. data have been extracted from the records (either put on cards or into a computer), which will certainly include an index; 2. actually group entries for a single person (e.g. put christening, marriage, burial on a single card) or even for families (add the partner's information, plus references to the kids). Questions - to the German speaking readers : does this correspond to your definition of "Verkartung" ? - to the English speaking readers : what would be the English word for this - if there is one ?
