Congratulations -- I imagine you garnered a rather healthy profit on the sale of your domain and information! Might those who volunteered so many hundreds of hours to the project know what the sale price was?
Inc., who will be using it for their own purposes. Furthermore, all external user accounts on the GENEALOGY.COM server have already been deactivated in preparation for the move. The current contents of GENEALOGY.COM will remain frozen as they are today.
I am not sure what "frozen" means in this context? Will the pages be thus eliminated? transferred to the Broderbund server? transferred to your proposed worldroots.com server? Or yet something else?
During the past 3 and 1/2 years, Brigitte and I have made a number of friends and acquaintences through the connection of our web site. We are confident that those who are truly our friends will continue to remain so despite this sudden and abrupt change of course.
It does seem a bit abrupt. I am surprised that you do not seem to have sought the advice of the groups before making such a move? Rick Heli
As many of you might imagine, our involvement with genealogy will not be diminished by this event. In fact, we already have a new domain name, WORLDROOTS.COM, which will be coming online at the same time that GENEALOGY.COM makes the transfer.
The content of WORLDROOTS.COM will be managed strictly by Brigitte and myself. We will most certainly be publishing links into the German servers of the genealogy pages that have been so thoughtfully maintained by all of you over these years.
Above all, we wish to thank all of those who have been a part of GENEALOGY.COM over the years. We will still be online and Brigitte's pages will remain accessable through WORLDROOTS.COM. We hope that everybody will stop by and check in on us from time to time.
Thanks so much for your friendship and contributions over the years,
Fred and Brigitte

None of the data was sold. We have only sold the domain name. The price and terms of the deal were made confidential.

A copy of the entire contents of the genealogy.com server exists on Rainer's genealogy.net machine. His machine was the mirror of our machine. Now, it's the master site. The data on our server will remain accessable until December 21st at which time the system will go offline and the data will cease to be served by the genealogy.com domain name. Broderbund will go on-line at the same time, with their own content.

Brigitte and I made the decision for personal reasons. Since the name was our property, we felt that no outside consultations were necessary. Please bear in mind that we haven't sold anything other than the name. The other thing is that we have decided not to continue our sponsorship as the master site for the German web pages. Our choice to discontinue sponsorship was in part mitigated by the endless discussions over advertising, costs, ownership, english vs. german language, etc.. that took place within the group. We found that it would be much simpler for us to have complete control over a site of our own, and hence the site worldroots.com was conceived. sincerely, -fred -- Brigitte Gastel Lloyd email: brigitte@qrz.com http://www.worldroots.com/brigitte ---------------------------------------------------- Wer über gewisse Dinge nicht den Verstand verliert, hat keinen zu verlieren. I guess I was a bit prescient in my recent questions as to who owns what around here. I was afraid that some such precipitous action which would completely ignore the group as a whole and let individual predispositions and personal benefits take over instead. My fear was not directed at anyone in particular but rather at the concept of individual sponsorship rather than joint sponsorship and ownership. As we know such a relationship always depends on the gooid will of one or more individuals and the smallest pebble can derail the train. It is a dangerous situation which is why I was in favor of a societal arrangement where individuals can come and go but the whole will stay. I agree with Rick that common courtesy would have been in order to 'discuss' this move. Even if it would have had no other outcome, it would have helped to organize an orderly transfer and no need for an abrupt cut-off to those who have been using genealogy.com for many years. I did not pick up my mail until late tonight and was hit with 137 messages and this shock. I have not yet read other responses to the 'announcement' but my immediate suggestion would be to move our pages to rootsweb.com as surely the access bandwidth at genealogy.net will not be sufficient. I don't think it is any of our business what the name was worth. Obviously enough to cause this change. Money still rules and it is a normal business process to cash in when it passes our doorstep. Again I only come back to common courtesy which one normally expects even in a business relationship.
